High Potential Individual visa
Open
Last verified July 2026
Open, subject to annual application limits running 1 November to 31 October. Structurally a dead end — it does not lead to settlement.
HPI is best understood as a 2-year option to find a better route, not a route in itself. It is unsponsored and permits work, self-employment and job-hunting, which makes it a cheap on-ramp to Global Talent or Skilled Worker — but families sometimes discover far too late that the two or three years they spent on it bought them nothing toward ILR.

What can go wrong
- It does not lead to settlement, cannot be extended, and the time does not count toward ILR. This is the single most misunderstood feature of the route.
- The qualification must be from a university on the eligible list and awarded within the last 5 years. The list changes annually and is narrow.
- Annual limits apply, so the route can effectively close mid-year.
- 2 years (3 with a PhD) is a short window in which to secure endorsement or sponsorship — plan the exit route before you arrive, not after.
