Global Talent visa

Open Last verified July 2026

Open. The most flexible route the UK operates: no job offer, no sponsor, no minimum salary, no investment.

For anyone who can plausibly get endorsed, this is the best-value immigration route in Western Europe — under GBP 800 in fees, no employer tie, full self-employment rights, and settlement in 3 years. The 'prestigious prize' list is the overlooked shortcut: winners bypass endorsement altogether and apply directly.

The facts

Qualifying figure
£766
Total landed cost
GBP 766 total per applicant (GBP 561 endorsement plus GBP 205 visa), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge at roughly GBP 1,035 per person per year. For a family of four over 5 years the health surcharge, not the visa, is the cost

Physical presence
No more than 180 days absent in any 12 months for settlement
Family
spouse or partnerchildren under 18
Permanent residency
3 years for exceptional talent (and for endorsed academia/research and digital technology talent routes); 5 years for exceptional promise
Citizenship
3 or 5 years to settlement plus 12 months
Language test
B1 English plus Life in the UK test for citizenship
Dual citizenship
Permitted
Requirements
aged 18 or overwork in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technologyendorsement from the relevant body, or receipt of an eligible prestigious prize
What can go wrong
  • Endorsement is the entire route and it is subjective. Fees are low precisely because refusal is common — build a proper evidence dossier rather than a CV.
  • 'Exceptional promise' gives you the visa but a 5-year settlement clock rather than 3. The difference between the two applications is worth two years of your life; apply for talent if the evidence supports it.
  • The route confers no tax advantage. Global Talent holders are UK resident and taxed like anyone else — the FIG regime is a separate test with its own 10-year non-residence requirement.
  • The earned settlement reform could lengthen the 3-year and 5-year clocks; nothing is grandfathered yet.
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge is payable up front for the full visa period, which for a family of four on a 5-year grant is roughly GBP 20,700 in one payment.
