Gainful Occupation Permit

Open Last verified July 2026

Open. Available to employees and to the self-employed. Cheap and fast, and it is the permit that actually builds the clock toward permanent residence.

Counter-intuitively, the cheapest permit is the one that builds the most. At roughly USD 415 a year the GOP is what actually accrues toward permanent residence, while the far more expensive Residence Permit does not obviously do so. Sequencing matters here more than money.

What can go wrong
  • Ministry of Employment approval must be obtained before the permit application, and Seychelles Qualification Authority evaluation of foreign qualifications is required.
  • Seychelles-source employment income is taxable at up to 30%, and non-citizens get no tax-free threshold — 15% applies from the first rupee. The 'zero-tax Seychelles' story does not survive contact with a GOP.
  • A medical fitness certificate and a bank guarantee of at least SCR 20,000 are required where resident more than a month a year.
  • The permit is tied to the approved occupation; changing activity requires a fresh approval.
